Merritt News 06-17-2020

Good Morning Merritt Families,

We hope this update finds you and your family doing well.  Please read the updates and news below as it contains some very important information for all of you to know:

1.  We wrapped up our final day of students picking up their personal belongings and dropping off Chromebooks yesterday.
We are still missing about 75 Chromebooks and chargers that were borrowed and they have not been returned.  Please make it a point to get those returned to school ASAP as our technology company is going to be taking inventory, cleaning, and reimaging those Chromebooks for our students to use next fall.  Our office hours are Monday-Thursday 9:00-12:00 this week and next week.  In the agreement that was signed each family was responsible for returning the Chromebook and charger.  We do not have the extra $25,000 in our budget to replace the missing Chromebooks that were borrowed.

2.  There are still many mysteries surrounding what school will look like this fall.
We have three scenarios we are planning for and we are just waiting to see what regulations the Governor tells the schools they have to follow in order for us to pick the scenario that best fits what is laid out.  However, in order for everyone to be able to plan out their summer vacations and schedules I can tell you the first day of school for the 2020-2021 school year will be August 31, 2020.  We will do the best job we can of informing you of what our plans are moving forward.  Events that we have ran every August in the past like shirt/paperwork day, open houses, and practices for fall sports are all up in the air as we do not know how and when we will be able to hold these events as of today.  Please check your emails, school website, and our Facebook page often in order not to miss these announcements.

3.  With the largest state aid cut predicted in the history of public schools forecasted (Between $500-$1000 per student reduction.  That's between $337,000-$667,000 less money coming into our school for this fiscal year) for this coming up school year it is more important than ever to fill the remaining open spots in our classrooms for this fall.
We hope to have two open houses this August for prospective students and their families.  These dates, like everything else, will be announced as soon as possible.  However we will be open most of the summer Monday-thursday 9:00-12:00.  Any prospective parent can call and make an appointment with us to get a tour of the school during our summer hours.

How does this affect you?  Our best advertisement in recent years is "word of mouth" from our current families.  As an incentive for you to tell other families about Merritt Academy we are offering an exciting opportunity.  For every student your family refers between now through August 28th your family's name will get put into a drawing for Meijer's gift cards.  There will be a drawing next fall for some huge gift cards in the following amounts:

1st Place-  $1,000

2nd Place- $750

3rd Place- $500

All you have to do is have the family you have referred mention your name when they are enrolling and your name will get put into the drawing.  The more students you send our way the better chance you have of winning these gift cards!!!!!

4. Report Cards will be mailed home to every student by the end of June.
Please look for these in the next couple of weeks.  If you do not receive it by July 6th please contact the office and we will make arrangements to get it to you.

5.  We still have a few yearbooks (K-12) for purchase.
The elementary and middle school are $15 and high school are $40.  Several yearbooks for elementary and middle school students have not been picked up yet.  Please stop by during our office hours to pick these up.

Like always please do not hesitate to contact the school for anything during these summer months.  We look forward to hopefully having as normal of a start to the school year as possible.  We all need a little normal back in our lives.  I hope you have a great summer with all of your children and I look forward to seeing all of you next fall.

Educationally Yours,

Mr. Seiferlein
